Your Marketing is Like Your Clinic: Where Are Customers Slipping Away?

If you set up your clinic, you know where to look when patients aren't coming in. But what about digitally? I'll show you where you're losing people (and money, of course).
Your Marketing is Like Your Clinic: Where Are You Losing Customers?
Have you ever felt like you're pouring money into digital advertising, but customers aren't showing up at your business? Let me be honest with you: most entrepreneurs I talk to—clinic owners, restaurateurs, shopkeepers—feel this way at first. They see ads everywhere, are told they need to be on social media, that they have to pay, and so they do. But the thing is, paying doesn't automatically guarantee results.
Recently, a client who owns a dental clinic told me: 'Laura, I invest in Instagram, people like my posts, some comment, but my appointment book looks the same.' I understood her perfectly because I went through the same thing with my own business. It's a jumble of acronyms, numbers, and empty promises. But the truth is, digital marketing isn't as different from your physical business as it seems. There are points where people get interested, points where you ask them to act, and points where you lose them.
The Digital Funnel, Explained with Your Business Logic
Your Shop Window: The First Impression of Your Ad (CTR)
Imagine your clinic or your shop. What's the first thing a potential customer sees? The shop window, right? If the window is bland, unappealing, or doesn't clearly show what you sell, people walk by without a second glance. In the digital world, that shop window is your ad: the photo or video, the text, the hook.
We call this the CTR (Click-Through Rate). It's the percentage of people who see your ad and decide to click on it. If out of every 1,000 people who saw it, only 5 clicked, you have a very low CTR. It's like if out of 1,000 people walking down your street, only 5 stopped to look at your clinic. Wouldn't you think your shop window wasn't working? It's the same in digital marketing.
For example, a hair salon in a Madrid neighborhood noticed their ads were getting many views, but almost no one was clicking. Their CTR was 0.4%. We changed the image from a generic hairstyle to a short video of a real client happily leaving the salon, with a before-and-after. The CTR rose to 2.1% in a week. More people were stopping to 'look at the digital shop window', and it made a difference. I won't lie, sometimes it's a matter of testing and re-testing which image or video works best until you hit the sweet spot.
The Sign-Up Sheet: When Someone Shows Real Interest (Lead)
Okay, you've managed to get people to stop and look at your digital shop window and click. What happens next? Well, in your clinic, you don't let them leave. You try to get their details, to sign them up for something. It's like that sign-up sheet at reception for the waiting list, or to receive information about a new treatment. People leave their name and phone number because they are genuinely interested.

Digitally, we call that person a Lead (or potential customer). It's someone who has filled out a form with their details because they are interested in something specific, like a free consultation for a dental implant or an offer for a facial treatment. They haven't paid yet, but they're warm. A renovation business realized that many clicks were reaching their website, but very few were filling out the quote request form. Their 'sign-up sheet' was too long and asked for too much information initially.
We reduced the form to just name and phone number for a 'Quick Diagnosis.' The number of Leads tripled in a month, and their field teams had more evaluation visits. This leads us to the next question: what happens when they 'walk through the virtual door'?
The Consultation Room: Where You Close the Sale Without Distractions (Landing Page)
When a patient enters your clinic and asks about a specific treatment, you don't just leave them in the waiting room full of distractions. You take them to a private consultation room. There, the conversation is only about what interests them; you answer their questions, offer options, and, ideally, book an appointment. That's the goal, right? Zero distractions, total focus.
In digital marketing, that's a Landing Page. It's a super simple web page, designed with a single objective: for the person to leave their details or book an appointment. It has no menus, no links to other sections, and no irrelevant information. It gets straight to the point. I've seen clinics with spectacular ads and excellent CTRs, but then they sent people to their main website, which was a maze. People got lost and didn't leave any information.
A restaurant that wanted to promote its daily menu did great with ads, but then the link went to their 'About Us' page. Of course, no one booked. We created a specific Landing Page for the daily menu, with appetizing photos and a prominent 'Book Now' button. Bookings increased by 40% in a couple of weeks. It seems simple, but the number of businesses that fail here is incredible.

How Much Does All This Cost? The Price of Bringing a Customer to Your Door
- Cost of Acquiring a Customer (CPA): Imagine you hire someone to hand out flyers for your clinic. You pay them €100 a day, and they bring you 2 new patients. Each patient cost you €50. That's your CPA, the cost of a new customer walking through your door. If you spend €200 on ads and get 4 leads that convert into appointments, your CPA is €50. I used to stress about this at first too. The important thing is that it's profitable for your business, of course.
- The Return on Your Ad Spend (ROAS): Imagine you have a machine in your clinic where you put in €1 for advertising and it returns €3 in treatments sold. That's a ROAS of 3. If it returns less than €1, you're losing money, and you need to stop the machine or fix it. A nutrition business was achieving a ROAS of 1.5—meaning for every euro invested, they recovered €1.5... which is good, but could be better. By analyzing their most profitable treatments and focusing ads there, we raised their ROAS to 4 in a couple of months. It's a matter of continuous refinement.
- Ad Fatigue: Have you noticed that if a song plays too often in your shop's background music, people get tired of it or ignore it? The same thing happens with your ads. If people in your city see the same photo of your clinic three times a day for two weeks, the ad becomes invisible. We call this Ad Fatigue. The CTR drops, and it costs you more to get a click. That's why you need to rotate creatives (images, videos, texts). It's not easy, and at first, it's a bit confusing to keep track of, but you learn to spot it in time through experience.
Demystifying Digital Marketing: How to Know Where to Focus Your Efforts
Look, the idea is simple: digital marketing is like the day-to-day operations of your business, but with different terminology. If you see that no one is looking at your ads (low CTR), the problem is with your 'digital shop window.' If many people look, but don't inquire (low Leads), your 'sign-up sheet' or offer isn't attractive. And if many people come in, but then don't book an appointment (low conversion on the Landing Page), your 'consultation room' isn't effective or is distracting.
Don't get overwhelmed by the acronyms at first. The important thing is to understand the logic behind them. If you don't know where the problem is, how can you fix it? The key is to think about your customer: from the first time they see you until they become a satisfied patient or client. Each step is an opportunity for them to stay, or to slip away. And sometimes, a small improvement in one of those steps can change everything. I know it sounds like a lot of work, but it's more a matter of logic and common sense than knowing a lot about computers.
